NEW: Update of Speakers List - see below.

THE ANNUAL CONVENTION

The Association's first Convention was held in 1947, and has been an annual event ever since. Besides the YPA Annual General Meeting, there is a bourse with up to 30 dealers present, an exhibition, and display including the best entries from the YPA competition, and the signing of the Roll for any new Distinguished Yorkshire Philatelists.

Conventions are usually hosted by a member society at a convenient and suitable location. A Programme is produced giving details of the Convention and distributed to societies in advance. The Programmes often carry useful philatelic articles.

The Convention also provides an opportunity for collectors to meet their fellow collectors and make useful contacts. It is usually held on a Saturday early in June.

THE ANNUAL COMPETITION

The YPA has been holding an annual competition since 1955. The number of classes has increased over the years and they are now divided into two sections of SENIOR and JUNIOR. The Rules are currently under review.

The SENIOR Classes are:

NATIONAL CLASS
BRITISH COMMONWEALTH CLASS
FOREIGN CLASS
POSTAL HISTORY CLASS
AERO-PHILATELIC CLASS
POSTAL STATIONERY CLASS
THEMATIC CLASS
CINDERELLA CLASS
REVENUES CLASS
SOCIAL PHILATELY CLASS

In addition there is an award for LITERATURE

The JUNIOR Classes are based on age:

Class A is open to those aged 16 but under 18 years (16 page entry)
Class B is open to those aged 12 but under 16 years (12 page entry)
Class C is open to those under 12 years of age (6 page entry)

The age for an entry in the JUNIOR Class is determined by the entrants' age on 1 May of the year in which the competition is held. The competition is open to any junior living in the YPA area affiliated to a member society of the YPA (and submitting the entry through that society), or any junior of a school stamp club whose entry has won a school competition and is submitted by the Competition Secretary.

See the Rules of the Competition and a list of previous winners for more details. Contact your local society or the YPA Secretary for further information.

THE YPA NEWSLETTER & SYLLABUS BOOKLET

The YPA produces a Newsletter twice a year to keep members of affiliated societies up to date with activities. The Newsletter also contains articles of lasting philatelic interest. The Syllabus Booklet contains details of all affiliated societies with their programmes of meetings where these have been notified in time for publication around August each year.

Email the Newsletter Editor with any contributions to the Newsletter.

THE YPA HANDBOOK

The YPA has produced a handbook giving full details of the Association's activities, contacts, the Association's Rules and the Competition Rules, and lists of speakers and judges. The Handbook also gives information about the history of the YPA, previous Conventions and competition winners and full details of all affiliated societies. Copies are held by each society's YPA delegate and are available for reference by all members of affiliated societies.

REGISTER OF SPEAKERS
WILLING TO GIVE DISPLAYS

The YPA Handbook gives a full listing of speakers willing to give displays. However, it was last updated and published in 2006 and some of the details are now out of date.

A list of speakers in the Yorkshire Area updating the information given in the YPA Handbook is shown on this site. It includes additional displays and speakers not included in the YPA Handbook. Syllabus secretaries looking for suitable speakers can refer to both the listing on this site and the listing in the Handbook. Speakers not shown in either of the listings who would like to be included, or those included who wish to update their details should send full details to the Editor for publication in the YPA Newsletter and the Webmaster for inclusion on this site. The listings available on this web site can be accessed at:

Listing of Speakers Alphabetically A to M

Listing of Speakers Alphabetically N to Z

The ABPS publication Philatelic Lecturers and Displays List 2011 gives a national listing of speakers but does not include many of the speakers shown in the YPA Handbook or the updates on this web site.

The YPA offers the following guidance in approaching and entertaining speakers:

Give prospective speakers a choice of dates and give them plenty of advance notice.

Offer expenses, and for speakers travelling a long distance, overnight accommodation if required.

Provide details of venue, timing, number of sheets to be displayed and a location map.

At the meeting restrict society business to the minimum out of deference to the speaker.

Provide speakers with a Certificate of Appreciation as a memento of their visit.

REGISTER OF JUDGES

Refer to the YPA Handbook for a listing of members of affiliated societies willing to judge competitions at society and federation level.

ROLL OF DISTINGUISHED
YORKSHIRE PHILATELISTS

Since 1976 the YPA has been honouring philatelists that have made an important contribution to philately in the YPA area by recording their names on the Roll of Distinguished Yorkshire Philatelists.

Societies wishing to propose a candidate for election to the Roll should consult the Handbook for the criteria and format for a submission. The closing date for a submission is the 31 December each year.

AFFILIATIONS

The YPA is affiliated to the Association of British Philatelic Societies and provides an important link between philately at local and national levels.

Individual affiliated societies can also become members of the ABPS and secure advantages for their members.
