Morley Postal History
ABOUT US
Morley Philatelic Society was founded in 1970, and offers stamp collectors in and around Morley
friendly and informal meetings, opportunities to buy and exchange material, and regular meetings where
members can see varied displays and meet fellow collectors. We welcome both beginners and experienced
stamp collectors and postal historians. Our experienced collectors are always ready to help new
collectors to develop and improve their collections with advice, to answer questions and try to
solve philatelic problems.
We are affiliated to the Association of British Philatelic Societies (ABPS) and the Yorkshire Philatelic
Association (YPA), and our members enjoy the additional benefits this brings in discounts from certain
philatelic suppliers and participation in national and regional exhibitions and conventions.
Our Annual Subscriptions are:
Ordinary Members ........ £5.00
Students .........................£1.00

MORLEY POSTAL HISTORY
This is an on-going project to show items of Morley postal history. If you have items to include please email
the Webmaster (below) with a suitable caption and an image (preferably as a jpeg).
THE PENNY POST
The first Penny Post was established in London by William Dockwra in 1680. Power was given to the
Postmaster General by an Act of 1765 to establish a Penny post in any large town of Great Britain or
Ireland. Many were established using a distinctive hand-stamp. The Penny Post provided conveyance
of a letter locally, or to the nearest main post town for conveyance from there at the regular postal charge
in force for the distance to be carried.
THE MORLEY PENNY POST
A boxed hand-stamp (45 x 12 mm) was in use by the Morley Penny Post from 1829 to 1840 when it became
redundant with the introduction of the Universal Penny Post. The hand-stamp is found in black and blue.
