More about us ...

Our more experienced members are always ready to help and advise less experienced and novice collectors. We are the oldest established provincial society with a continuous record of meetings and value our traditions, but we are also forward-looking and welcoming.

We hold regular fortnightly meetings at the Leeds General Infirmary between September and May with invited displays, competitions and members' evenings. See below for our programme of meetings from September 2008 through to May 2009.

We have one of the best philatelic libraries in the country housed on loan with the Leeds Central Reference Library. Only our members can borrow books; non-members can consult them but not take them from the Library.

We operate an exchange packet for members to purchase stamps at advantageous prices and dispose of their unwanted material.

We sponsor an annual two day Stamp Fair at Pudsey with more than thirty dealers, refreshments, free admission and parking, and specialist society meetings.

We hold an Annual Dinner for members and wives, partners and guests to socialise and enjoy a night out and a good meal.

We are affiliated to the Association of British Philatelic Societies and the Yorkshire Philatelic Association.

The Society owns a Forgeries Reference Collection and Yorkshire Postal History Collections, which are available for members to study and for display to other societies.

Leeds Philatelic
Society's Logo
Our Logo features the Maltese Cross cancel of Leeds*,
and the Owls from the City of Leeds Civic Crest.
The Owls were introduced when the first
Royal Charter was granted in 1626, to
compliment the first Alderman, Sir John Savile,
whose arms contained three owls.

* Used to cancel early stamps of the 1840's. (See below.)
The City of Leeds Civic Crest also
has three owls, but when the Society
designed its Logo, one 'flew away'.
City of Leeds Civic Crest
Leeds Maltese Cross on 1d Black
The Leeds Maltese Cross was of a unique design. Being hand cut the Leeds Maltese Cross is different from all other Maltese Crosses in use throughout the country. It was first applied in red, but later the colour was changed to black (shown left). This did not show up well on the Penny Black stamp and the colour of the stamp was changed to red. For many years red became the colour adopted for all countries for stamps used for their basic domestic postage rate.
